Equine Osteopathy

The philosophy behind Equine Osteopathy is: for the body to be truly healthy, all tissues must have proper mobility thus affecting the flow of blood, lymph and nerve impulses. The Osteopath focuses on freeing up fascia, thus allowing free flow of fluids in the body. An area where the flow is restricted is termed a blockade. Areas beyond the blockade experience a decrease in the flow of nutrients into the area, and a decrease in the flow of toxins out of the area. This leads to poor oxygenation resulting in a de-vitalization of the affected tissue. The de-vitalized tissue is then susceptible to illness and injury.

In Equine Osteopathy, an understanding of the autonomic nervous system and the gamma loop theory combines a deep understanding of equine anatomy and physiology with spinal and extremity joint manipulation, visceral (organ) manipulation, and cranial sacral therapy to release blockades and return the body back to optimum mobility. With the return of mobility, the vital force is able to flow again to assist and promote the body’s innate self-healing mechanism.

Cranial Sacral Therapy

The Osteopath “listens” or “feels” the craniosacral rhythm (primary respiratory rhythm) by placing their hands on the horse’s skull (may also feel the rhythm through the sacrum or other locations on the horse’s body).  The Osteopath gently works with the spine and the skull and its cranial sutures, diaphragms, and fascia. In this way, the restrictions of nerve passages are eased, the movement of cerebrospinal fluid, blood and lymph through the spinal cord and skull is optimized, and immobility of bones is eased.

Equine Touch - Soft Tissue Release Treatment

Equine Touch is a non-diagnostic, non-invasive, hands-on system of bodywork, addressing the whole horse. It includes an organized series of unique, gentle, vibrational moves over soft tissue. Equine Touch is “a discipline, a predetermined series of moves over specific points on the soft tissue of the equine’s body, choreographed in such a manner as to supply the horse with an energy-supported blueprint aimed at informing, training, or coaching the animal’s innate wisdom to address and hopefully positively correct any structural malfunction through the encouragement, release and uninterrupted flow of Ki (Chi) energy.” Amazing results which include relaxation, contentment, self-adjusting/alignments and expediated recovery from injuries.

Stretching

Horses instinctively know how to stretch; they stretch spontaneously, continually and naturally, tuning up the muscles they need to use most. In normal conditions a horse will not overstretch. Regular stretching will benefit your horse and will give you feedback on their condition. Some of the benefits of stretching:

  • Relaxation
  • Reduction of overall muscle tension and stiffness.
  • Increased circulation of both blood and lymph fluids.
  • Increased oxygenation and nutrition in the tissues.
  • Increased elasticity of the muscles, tendons and ligaments.
  • Increased flexibility and range of motion of the joints.
  • Improved coordination.
  • Reduction of muscle strain and ligament sprain.
  • Improvement of the stride length.
  • Improved reflex time response

Always stretch when your horse is warm! Muscles, tendons and ligaments (eventually joint capsules) risk damage if stretched when cold. Stretching your horse after a warm-up period will limit the risk of injury from overstretching. If your horse has had any recent physical problems or surgery, particularly of the joints and muscles, or if they have been inactive or sedentary for some time, consult your equine therapist before starting a stretching program. Remember – stretch your horse slowly and gently to give the horse time to adjust their body and mind to the physical and the nervous stress release that stretching initiates.

Equine Accupressure - Specialized Kinesiology

“Touch for Health is a system of balancing posture, attitude and life energy to relieve stress, aches and pains, feel and function better, be more effective, clarify and achieve goals and enjoy life.”
www.touch4health.com

“Touch for Health uses “Muscle Testing” which is based on the concept of internal energy to detect imbalances, thus, taking advantage of the body’s intelligently designed mechanisms to let us discover what is going on inside from the outside. It involves testing the body’s responses when applying slight pressure to a large muscle, to provide information on energy blockages, the functioning of the organs, nutritional deficiencies, among other things. It can also be used to test the body’s responses to herbs and other remedies.”

Massage

The massage touch has a very strong healing influence on the horse. Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body in order to achieve specific goals of relaxation, or stimulation, dispelling toxins, and of releasing muscle-related problems such as trigger points and stress points.  It is used to prevent and relieve stress as well as to assist in recovery from injuries. It greatly improves circulation, thereby promoting a good supply of nutrients to the muscle groups. Massage therapy greatly contributes to relaxing the nervous system from stress, relaxing the self-regulation factors between body and mind.

Infrared Light Therapy

Infrared light therapy equipment innovatively utilizes light energy to enhance the body’s own natural and intelligent healing processes. It is a non-intrusive, drug-free modality used to treat and/or prevent injuries or re-injuries. It also can alleviate pain, stress, and swelling – safely, effectively, and painlessly. Light therapy units emit a specific wavelength of photon energy, similar to the sun’s rays. In small doses, and with correct power, light therapy enhances already healthy cells and stimulates damaged cells to begin their healing process.

Infrared light therapy has been used effectively to help:

  • Relieve pain and founder
  • Prevent injuries
  • Energize acupressure points
  • Heal open wounds & prevent formation of scar tissue
  • De-traumatize an abused animal
  • Jump-start the immune system
  • Alleviate arthritis symptoms
  • Ease sore feet and muscles
  • Reduce swelling
  • Promote healing of early stages of navicular
  • Calm nerves before an event
  • Increase performance potential
